Greetings Sisters and Brothers,

It is with a profound sense of joy and anticipation that I greet you in the name of our risen Christ!

This year will mark the beginning of a new day for the face of church in the Nation's Capitol. For far too long, many individuals have remained in churches where they have been berated or tolerated at best; mainly because there were very few options providing a worship experience that was both affirming and culturally-appropriate. Conversely, many have written off the church altogether because they find organized religion irrelevant, driven by greed, arrogant, and oppressive — rightfully so in many cases.

However, I am indeed glad that persons all across this nation and throughout the world are finding the voice to proclaim their truth; assuming their rightful places in the kingdom of God. City of Refuge - DC is part of this amazing work! I believe wholeheartedly that now is the time that God is calling us to bring all of who we are — our whole selves — out into the open and into the light of God. It is only when we do this, that God can bless our whole lives and give us streams in the deserts of our existence; providing us with the ability to live abundantly healthy and honest lives.

I am convinced that God is raising up a people who believe that religious faith and piety must be accompanied by intentional and compassionate ministry that is designed to meet the needs of those who are most vulnerable to the injustices of our society. My prayer is that through City of Refuge - DC, God will raise up a community of young and old, straight and gay, preachers and teachers, black and white, activists and artists, convinced and questioning, who will embody Christ's ever-present love demonstrated through action in the world. It is my hope that City of Refuge - DC would become an institution — serving as a beacon of hope for the Greater Washington, DC metropolitan area and our global community.
