Pastor Kendal N. Brown is a minister, writer, and musician. A native of Danville, Virginia, he descends from a long line of committed Christians, ministers, and persons who embodied devotion to God through service to humanity. Rev. Brown's extensive and varied church experience began in both the Baptist and Apostolic church. It was under the strong influence of this experience, that he first sensed a call to ministry and service to the community.

Rev. Brown attended North Carolina A&T State University and holds an undergraduate degree in Sociology from Averett College. During his final year of undergraduate studies, Rev. Brown accepted his call to ministry and said "yes" to the call to pursue formal theological training.  He holds a Master of Divinity degree with honors from the Virginia Union University School of Theology.  During his seminary journey, he also completed additional studies at Yale Divinity School, where his work focused multicultural ministry and interfaith dialogue.

While attending seminary, God began to broaden his understanding of the true nature of his calling.  During this pivotal time in life and ministry, God revealed that Rev. Brown's mission was to build bridges and to provide a safe place for hurting people and persons on the margins of society.

A gifted musician, Rev. Brown has also served as minister of music at the Faith Community Church of Richmond, VA under the dynamic leadership of Rev. Dr. Patricia Gould-Champ.  Upon the completion of seminary, Rev. Brown relocated to Washington, DC where he served as the Associate Pastor of Worship & Administration for Southeast Christian Fellowship Church.  While living in Washington, DC he served as Associate Minister for Amistad UCC in Lanham, MD, where he conducted a weekly Bible Study and served as the Music & Arts Coordinator.

Sensing a call to prepare for the birthing of something new, in May of 2003, Rev. Brown made one of the biggest faith-moves of his life; packing up everything and moving to the San Francisco Bay Area to study in ministry under the guidance of his mentor, Bishop Yvette Flunder, founding pastor of City of Refuge UCC - San Francisco.  Since his move, God has indeed been faithful and has provided streams in the desert.  Rev. Brown served as the Associate Pastor of Christian Education at the dynamic City of Refuge UCC in San Francisco.  He currently serves as Associate Director of Admissions at Wesley Thelogical Seminary in Washington, DC. Rev. Brown immensely enjoys his work and the opportunity to connect with prospective seminarians as they wrestle with the call of God and journey through the discernment process.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, God has indeed caused Rev. Brown's ministry to flourish.  He has traveled extensively throughout the United States and parts of Africa, proclaiming a message of hope and liberation. He has also served as an HIV/AIDS prevention counselor both here in the states and abroad.

Rev. Brown anticipates that City of Refuge - DC is destined to become an inspiring and transformative place of spiritual empowerment and healing for individuals living on the margins of society.

Rev. Brown spends his free time traveling, journaling, reading, and laughing with friends.
